Abstract
This book is the second volume in the Peking University Series on Theoretical Innovation in International Relations, with a primary focus on topics related to national security studies and disciplinary development.
First, by examining the academic construction and theoretical evolution of national security studies, the volume aims to build and advance a discipline and theoretical system of national security with Chinese characteristics. It introduces concepts such as the “comprehensive security theory” defined through reverse risk assessment, and a “national security system theory.”
Second, due to the changing international environment, geopolitical differences, and the unique histories, cultures, and ideologies of various countries and regions, national security studies around the world exhibit distinctive characteristics. This book systematically reviews and summarizes national security studies in twelve major countries and regions—namely the United States, Russia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, India, Israel, South Korea, Australia, Pacific Island nations, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It explores and analyzes the theories, issues, and methods of national security research in these areas, as well as their related institutions, academic systems, curricula, and talent development mechanisms.
This volume provides a theoretical foundation for implementing a holistic view of national security, strengthening national security talent pipelines, and reinforcing national security capacity building. It also contributes to the domestic development of national security as an academic discipline by enriching topic selection and methodological exploration.
