Abstract
This book integrates social network analysis and complex interdependence political economy theories to propose an “actor–structure” interaction model. Using the United States’ network-based sanctions since the 21st century as cases—specifically in the areas of monetary finance, value chains, and technology against China, Russia, and Iran—it analyzes how these sanctions operate. The three economic dimensions correspond to Susan Strange’s structural power categories: market, knowledge, and finance. All targeted countries are recognized by the U.S. government as major challengers to U.S. security interests in the 21st century. By comparing different combinations of sanction targets and dimensions, the book tests intra- and inter-group differences as posited by various hypotheses. This work enriches systematic research on network-based sanctions in the field of international relations and provides policy insights for China on managing risks associated with U.S. network-based sanctions.
