New Zealand Media Delegation Visits the School of International Studies at Peking University
26 Jun 2024

At the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, on the morning of June 19, 2024, two New Zealand media representatives—Bruce Munro, a freelance writer for the Otago Daily Times, and Sam Sachdeva, domestic news editor of New Zealand media outlet Newsroom—visited the School of International Studies at Peking University. Professor Wang Dong, Executive Director of the Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding at Peking University, Professor Ding Dou, and other scholars, along with student representatives, met with the delegation at the School of International Studies.

Professor Wang Dong first extended a warm welcome to the New Zealand media delegation. He noted that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. China will adhere to the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits under the Belt and Road Initiative, collaborating with Global South countries, including New Zealand, to achieve mutual development and shared prosperity.

Professor Ding Dou stated that while China is deeply interconnected with the global economy, changes in the international landscape, particularly in security dynamics, have posed challenges for China. In recent years, the Chinese government has proposed the “dual circulation” strategy, encouraging domestic technological innovation and successfully developing local industries. This has not only ensured self-sufficiency but also enabled high-quality exports, demonstrating China’s proactive approach to economic development and globalization challenges.

Subsequently, the two sides engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on key topics such as China-New Zealand relations, China’s economic development, China’s role on the international stage, the “dual circulation” strategy, and its impact on China-New Zealand trade relations.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and New Zealand. Both sides expressed their hope for more opportunities for future exchanges, aiming to strengthen communication and cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other fields, further promote people-to-people exchanges, and advance the sustained, healthy, and stable development of China-New Zealand relations.
