On February 26, 2025, Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission, visited the School of International Studies at Peking University. Dean Tang Shiping received the delegation in Room A101 of the school. Associate Deans Zhang Haibin and Dong Zhaohua, Assistant Professor Lu Xiao, and Director of the Research Office Wang Yumeng also attended the meeting. The delegation was accompanied by Professor Daniele de Giovanni from the University of Bologna and Wang Qinghong, Executive Director of the China-Europe Philanthropy Innovation Center at Peking University.
Dean Tang warmly welcomed Mr. Prodi and his delegation. He introduced the history and distinguishing features of the School of International Studies, with a particular emphasis on its progress in teaching and research in European studies. He noted that this visit was a significant event for the school, taking place against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations and the 55th anniversary of China-Italy diplomatic ties. The visit holds great importance for enhancing exchanges between both sides.
Mr. Prodi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception. He pointed out that as global uncertainties continue to grow, the strategic importance of China-EU relations has become increasingly prominent. In the face of a turbulent international landscape, it is essential to take a long-term perspective on the development of bilateral relations.
Following the meeting, Mr. Prodi joined the class “Introduction to the European Union” and delivered a special lecture titled “The Current State of the EU and Prospects for China-EU/Italy Cooperation.” The lecture was attended by Associate Dean Zhang Haibin, Professor Daniele de Giovanni, and Director Wang Qinghong. It was hosted by Assistant Professor Lu Xiao from the School of International Studies.
During the lecture, Mr. Prodi reviewed the historical trajectory of European integration, introduced the core institutional structure of the EU, and discussed the impacts and challenges posed by the European debt crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. When addressing China-EU relations and future prospects, Mr. Prodi emphasized the need for mutual understanding and a flexible, respectful approach to foreign policy-making. He advocated for building a solid foundation for win-win cooperation.
In the interactive Q&A session, students actively posed questions. Drawing on his extensive experience and professional insight, Mr. Prodi responded in detail, deepening students’ understanding of the EU and China-EU relations.
The lecture was both informative and engaging. It not only offered students a clearer understanding of the history of European integration and the institutional structure of the EU but also prompted them to reflect more deeply on the challenges and future direction of the European Union.
At the conclusion of the event, Associate Dean Zhang Haibin presented a gift to Mr. Prodi on behalf of the School of International Studies.
